Simple: meditation is a way to train the mind. Most of the time, your mind is wandering –  thinking about the future, dwelling on the past, worrying, fantasizing, fretting or daydreaming. This distracts you from actually participating authentically with life.

Meditation actually changes your brain by enhancing your ability to focus. It also increases memory formation, learning ability and the ability to empathize. Another side effect – it increases your happiness quota! The consistent practice of meditation reduces stress, anxiety, fear, depression, and substance dependence. Yeah!!!!

Many top athletic sports teams and individuals utilize the benefits of meditation to enhance their athletic performances. The practice of meditation enhances creativity. It gets you out of your analytic, beta brain.

Meditation isn’t about letting your thoughts wander – and it isn’t about trying to empty your mind, either. Instead, the practice involves paying close attention to the present moment — especially your own thoughts, emotions and sensations — whatever is happening in the now. Choose something to focus on, such as your breath, a candle, or a sound (such as ohm). 

Invariably, your mind will want to wander. Don’t beat yourself up about this. It’s not only a natural phenomenon, it’s expected. What’s important is how you respond when it happens. Simply acknowledge whatever it is you were thinking of — without judgment, without letting it carry you away — simply take a moment to bring your focus back to the present and resume your meditation.

Ideally, you shouldn’t stop this heightened awareness when you stop formally meditating. The purpose of meditation is to become observant throughout all parts of your life, so that you are more aware, heart-centered, and focused on the present as you navigate through your day.
